Character limits

TikTok Character Limit (2026): Captions, Bio, Username, Comments

TikTok captions can run to 4,000 characters in the app, but schedulers that post through TikTok's API are capped at 2,200 for videos. Every TikTok text limit for 2026, with how sure we are of each.

The TikTok character limit for captions is 4,000 characters when you post from the TikTok app, as of September 2026. Tools that post videos through TikTok's official API are held to 2,200 characters, which is why you'll see both numbers quoted online.

TikTok doesn't publish most of its text limits on a public help page, so this guide separates what TikTok documents itself from what creators and tool makers have measured. Where a number is only reported by third parties, we say so.

What is the TikTok character limit for captions?

In the TikTok app, a video or photo caption (TikTok calls it a description) can hold up to 4,000 characters. That figure is confirmed in one place TikTok does document: its developer reference for photo posts, which sets the description limit at "4000 in UTF-16 runes" (TikTok for Developers). Creators and caption tools report the same 4,000 limit for videos posted in the app (TypeCount, NapoleonCat).

Four thousand characters is a lot. It's roughly 600 to 700 words of plain English, longer than this section and the next two combined. You won't often need the full allowance, but it means a recipe, a tutorial or a product explainer can live entirely in the caption.

"Widely reported" means several independent caption tools and guides give the same number and no source contradicts it, but TikTok doesn't state it on a page we could open. If a limit matters for a campaign, type a test in the app: the field stops accepting characters when you hit the cap.

TikTok text limits as of September 2026. The two caption figures differ because of where you post from.

Why some tools say 2,200 characters

If a scheduling tool cuts your caption short, this is why. TikTok's Content Posting API, which schedulers and social media dashboards use, sets the video title field at "2200 in UTF-16 runes" (TikTok for Developers). Photo posts through the same API get a 90-character title plus a 4,000-character description.

So a caption of 3,000 characters works fine when you paste it into the TikTok app, but a scheduler posting the same video will reject it or trim it. Some online guides still list 2,200 as the only caption limit (Virlo); that was the in-app limit before the increase, and it's still the API limit for videos.

How many characters show before "more" on TikTok?

Only the first line or two of a caption shows over the video. The exact number of characters depends on the phone's screen width, the font size setting, and how much other text sits on the video. Third-party guides give figures from about 60 to 150 characters, which tells you there's no single cut-off.

The practical rule: assume viewers see around 60 to 100 characters and make those count. Put the topic, the promise or the question first, and save background and hashtags for later.

Two captions for the same video. Only the second one tells a scrolling viewer what they'll get.

TikTok bio character limit

A TikTok bio holds 80 characters, a figure that almost every caption tool and guide agrees on (NapoleonCat). Some creators report seeing a higher cap on their accounts, and TikTok's support pages don't publish a single bio maximum (boomp.net). Write for 80 and you'll be safe everywhere.

Eighty characters is shorter than a single post on most other platforms. Use it for who you are, what people get from following you, and one call to action. A line break takes up a character, so a three-line bio has two fewer characters for words.

TikTok username and display name limits

TikTok has two names on every profile, and they have different rules:

  • Username (@handle): up to 24 characters. Letters, numbers, underscores and periods only, and it's the part of your profile link that people type. Third-party guides report that you can change it once every 30 days (HandleGrab).

  • Display name: up to 30 characters. This is the name shown in bold on your profile, separate from your @handle (NapoleonCat).

Keep the handle short and easy to say out loud. People often hear it in a video before they see it written, and every extra underscore is a chance to mistype it.

TikTok comment character limit

Comments and replies are capped at 150 characters (TypeCount). That's about the length of one early-era tweet, so long answers to follower questions usually work better as a reply video.

Do hashtags and emoji count toward the caption limit?

Yes. Hashtags and @mentions are part of the caption text, so every character of "#bakingtips" (10 characters, including the #) comes out of the same allowance. TikTok's developer docs describe hashtags and mentions as items parsed from within the caption, not as a separate field (TikTok for Developers).

We couldn't find an official cap on the number of hashtags per TikTok post. Unlike Instagram, which now limits posts to five hashtags (see our Instagram character limits guide), TikTok's limit is simply the caption length. Most creators use a handful of specific tags rather than dozens of broad ones.

How TikTok's caption limit has changed

TikTok captions used to be short. Third-party guides describe a 300-character limit that rose to 2,200, then to 4,000 (Social Media College, TypeCount). TikTok announced the first jump inside the app, telling users they could "now type up to 2200 characters" in post descriptions.

We couldn't find a TikTok newsroom post for the move to 4,000, and third-party sources disagree on the year, so treat any exact date you see with caution. The pattern is clear, though: each change has made room for longer, more searchable captions.

TikTok says its For You recommendations use "video information, which might include details like captions, sounds, and hashtags", alongside much stronger signals such as whether people watch a video to the end (TikTok Newsroom). A caption won't rescue a weak video, but it helps TikTok and searchers understand what the video is about.

  1. Start with the words people would search. "No-knead bread recipe" beats "Sunday vibes".

  2. Answer the question the video raises. Ingredients, steps, prices, links to sources: the details viewers would otherwise ask for in comments.

  3. End with one question or call to action. One, not three.

  4. Add a few specific hashtags last. Tags that describe the topic tell TikTok more than generic ones like #fyp.

  5. Check the length before you post, especially if a scheduler will publish it and the 2,200 limit applies.

Stacked bar showing an example 400-character TikTok caption: 70 characters for a hook with keywords, 220 for useful detail, 60 for a question or call to action, and 50 for three to five hashtags. Hashtags count toward the caption limit.
One way to split a mid-length caption. Most strong captions are far shorter than 4,000 characters.

Longer isn't automatically better. A clear 300-character caption that front-loads its keywords usually does more than 3,000 characters of filler. Use the length when you have real information to share, like a recipe or a step-by-step tutorial.

TikTok ad text limits

Paid ads follow different rules. For in-feed ads, TikTok shows the display name on one line with "a maximum of 10 characters (Chinese, Japanese, and Korean) or 20 characters in other languages", and the ad caption displays at most four lines. Non-Spark ad captions can't include clickable links, @mentions or hashtags, while Spark Ads reuse the caption from the organic post (TikTok Ads Help).

Posting the same message on several platforms? The limits differ a lot. Our guides to X character limits and YouTube title and description limits cover the rest, and the Character Limit Checker tests one piece of copy against all of them.

How many characters can a TikTok bio have?

80 characters, according to nearly every caption tool and guide. TikTok doesn't publish an official figure, so test in the app if you need more.

What is the TikTok username character limit?

24 characters, using only letters, numbers, underscores and periods. The display name shown on your profile can be up to 30 characters.

How long can a TikTok comment be?

150 characters per comment or reply. For longer answers, many creators reply with a video instead.

Do hashtags count toward the TikTok caption limit?

Only the first line or two, roughly 60 to 100 characters depending on the screen and on-screen text. Put your main point at the start of the caption.
