How many words in a novel? Most published novels are 70,000 to 100,000 words long, and about 80,000 to 90,000 words is the safest target for a first adult novel. By the definition used for major science fiction and fantasy awards, any story of 40,000 words or more counts as a novel.
The right number for you depends mostly on genre. Epic fantasy runs long, category romance runs short, and children's books follow their own rules. Below you'll find current ranges by genre, the official cutoffs for novellas and short stories, what literary agents say about debut manuscripts, and the real word counts of books you probably know.
How many words is a novel?
There are two answers, and it helps to keep them apart. The first is a definition. The Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers Association defines a novel as a work of 40,000 words or more for the Nebula Awards, and the Hugo Awards use the same 40,000-word line. Below that, a story is a novella or something shorter.
The second answer is a market expectation, and it's much higher. Publishers and agents think in ranges that fit a genre's shelf, price and reader habits. For most adult fiction that range sits between roughly 70,000 and 100,000 words. A 45,000-word adult thriller is technically a novel, but it will look thin to an agent who expects 80,000 or more.
So if the question is "Can I call this a novel?", 40,000 words is your answer. If the question is "Will an agent read past my query letter?", use the genre ranges below.
How many words in a novel, by genre
These ranges come from a May 2026 guide by Dana Isaacson, a former senior editor at Penguin Random House, with input from literary agent Paula Munier (Career Authors). They line up closely with what agents told The Manuscript Academy in 2026.
Genre | Typical word count | Notes |
|---|---|---|
Literary fiction | 80,000–100,000 | Agents prefer 80,000–95,000 for debuts |
Women's fiction | 75,000–100,000 | |
Mystery | 80,000–90,000 | Cozy mystery: 60,000–70,000 |
Thriller | 80,000–90,000+ | |
Mainstream romance | 70,000–90,000 | Category romance: 50,000–75,000 |
Science fiction | 90,000–110,000 | |
Fantasy | 90,000–120,000 | World-building adds length |
Romantasy | 90,000–100,000 | |
Historical fiction | 90,000–120,000 | |
Young adult | 50,000–80,000 | YA fantasy: 65,000–90,000 |
Middle grade | 40,000–50,000 | |
Memoir | 65,000–90,000 | Nonfiction, but often asked |

Why do the numbers differ so much? Readers of fantasy expect a whole world, and building one takes pages. Mystery readers expect pace, and padding kills it. Children's books are shaped by reading stamina and by what a parent or teacher will hand to a nine-year-old. Word count is really a proxy for what readers of that genre came to get.
Category romance word counts are exact
If you're writing for a series romance line, you don't get a range. You get a number. As of September 2026, Harlequin's submission pages list 50,000 words for Harlequin Presents, Harlequin Romance and Medical Romance, 55,000–60,000 for Intrigue, 55,000 for Love Inspired, and 70,000 for Special Edition, Heartwarming and Romantic Suspense.
Harlequin's editors say there's some flexibility: about 2,000 to 3,000 words either way of the target. The reason is practical. Each line prints at a fixed page count, so the word count is the page count.
How many words is a novella, novelette or short story?
The clearest cutoffs come from the awards world. The Nebula and Hugo rules agree on the same four bands:
Short story: under 7,500 words.
Novelette: 7,500 to 17,500 words.
Novella: 17,500 to 40,000 words.
Novel: 40,000 words or more.

Outside science fiction and fantasy, publishers and literary magazines set their own limits, and they're rarely this precise. Still, these bands are the closest thing fiction has to a standard. One surprise: by these rules, George Orwell's Animal Farm, at about 30,000 words, is a novella.
How long should a debut novel be?
Aim for the middle of your genre's range, not the edges. Former literary agent Nathan Bransford puts it plainly: an unusual length won't kill your chances, but it may decrease your odds, especially for a debut. He also points out that most very long and very short famous books were not first novels.
The pressure is mostly on the long side. Isaacson reports that any manuscript over 100,000 words now makes publishers nervous, partly because of higher printing and manufacturing costs. In the Manuscript Academy interview, agent Noelle Falcis Math said she would want a 110,000-word literary debut closer to 80,000 to 95,000 words.
Going short is less common but has its own problem. A 55,000-word adult novel may be read as underdeveloped, and it can be hard to price. If you're well under your genre's range, check whether subplots or secondary characters are carrying enough weight before you pad anything.
Word counts for young adult, middle grade and picture books
Children's publishing is where word count matters most, because the age of the reader sets hard expectations.
Young adult: about 50,000 to 80,000 words. Literary agent and editor Mary Kole suggests a ceiling of about 85,000 for contemporary YA and 95,000 for YA fantasy or science fiction.
Middle grade: about 40,000 to 50,000 words for most novels, with simpler middle grade running as short as 20,000 words according to Writer's Digest.
Chapter books: roughly 4,000 to 15,000 words, per Kole.
Picture books: usually well under 1,000 words. Kole recommends 600 words at most, and agents interviewed by The Manuscript Academy gave a range of 500 to 1,000.
Picture books are the category writers most often overshoot. A 1,200-word picture book text feels short on the page, but the illustrations carry much of the story, and every extra line means less room for them.
How many words are in famous novels?
It helps to see where books you know land. These figures come from a list compiled by Nathan Bransford, drawing on several published counts. Treat them as approximate: editions differ, and different tools count hyphenated words and numbers differently.

A few things stand out. The Great Gatsby, at about 47,000 words, would be short for a debut literary novel today. The Hunger Games and To Kill a Mockingbird both sit right around 100,000 words. And the first Harry Potter book, at under 77,000 words, is shorter than many writers assume. The later books in that series grew far longer, which is Bransford's point: established authors get room that debuts don't.
Is 50,000 words a novel?
Yes, by definition. At 50,000 words you're past the 40,000-word line used by the Nebula and Hugo Awards. The number is familiar because it was the goal of National Novel Writing Month, whose nonprofit organizer announced it was shutting down in 2025, though many writers still use the 50,000-in-November challenge.
Whether 50,000 words is a complete book depends on the market. It's right on target for several category romance lines and long for middle grade. For adult literary fiction, a thriller or fantasy, treat 50,000 words as a strong first draft that will likely grow.
How many pages is a novel?
In a standard manuscript (12-point font, double-spaced, one-inch margins) you get roughly 250 words per page. That makes an 80,000-word novel about 320 manuscript pages and a 100,000-word novel about 400.
Word count | Manuscript pages (≈250 words each) | Reading time at 200 wpm |
|---|---|---|
40,000 | 160 | 3 hr 20 min |
60,000 | 240 | 5 hr |
80,000 | 320 | 6 hr 40 min |
90,000 | 360 | 7 hr 30 min |
100,000 | 400 | 8 hr 20 min |
120,000 | 480 | 10 hr |
Printed books are a different story. Trim size, font and leading all change how many words fit on a page, so the same manuscript can become a 250-page paperback or a 350-page hardcover. To test a specific layout, use the Words Per Page calculator. Our guide to how many pages 1,000 words fills explains the assumptions in more detail, and how long it takes to read 1,000 words covers reading speed.
How to count the words in your novel
Agents and editors want the number your word processor reports, not an estimate from page count. Bransford recommends using the count from your writing software and rounding it, so a 91,482-word manuscript goes in a query letter as 91,000 or 91,500 words.
Open the full manuscript as one file, or paste it in, chapter by chapter, if it's split across files.
Check what your tool skips. Google Docs, for example, counts everything except headers, footers and footnotes, so a running header won't inflate the total.
Remove notes to yourself, cut scenes parked at the end and bracketed placeholders before you count.
Round to the nearest thousand (or five hundred) for your query letter.
For a manuscript saved as a Word or PDF file, the Document Word Counter gives you a total without opening it in another program. If you want a detailed walk-through for each app, see how to check word count.
Common word count mistakes novelists make
Targeting the edge of the range. A 120,000-word debut fantasy is inside the range on paper, but it's also where agents start to hesitate. Aim for the middle.
Padding to hit a minimum. Extra description and repeated beats make a short book slower, not fuller. Add story, not words.
Using page counts in a query. Page counts depend on formatting. Word counts don't, which is why agents ask for them.
Comparing yourself to famous exceptions. Long books by established authors say little about what sells as a debut.
Counting the wrong file. Old drafts, notes and outline pages in the same document can add thousands of words.

Frequently asked questions
What is the minimum word count for a novel?
40,000 words is the usual minimum. The Nebula and Hugo Awards both define a novel as a story of 40,000 words or more, and anything shorter is a novella or short fiction.
How many words should a first novel be?
For most adult genres, 80,000 to 100,000 words. Fantasy and science fiction can run to about 110,000 or 120,000, while young adult is usually 50,000 to 80,000.
Is 100,000 words too long for a novel?
Not for fantasy, science fiction or historical fiction, but it's at the top end for most other adult genres. Many agents and editors grow cautious once a debut goes past 100,000 words.
How many words is a novella?
A novella is 17,500 to 40,000 words under the Nebula and Hugo Award rules. Between 7,500 and 17,500 words is a novelette, and under 7,500 is a short story.
How many words is a young adult novel?
Usually 50,000 to 80,000 words. YA fantasy and science fiction often run longer, up to about 90,000 or 95,000 words.
How many pages is an 80,000-word novel?
About 320 manuscript pages, double-spaced in a 12-point font. A printed book's page count depends on its trim size and typesetting.
How many words is The Great Gatsby?
About 47,000 words (47,094 in one widely cited count). That makes it a short novel by today's standards, but still above the 40,000-word line for a novel.
What is the average novel word count?
The average adult novel is about 80,000 to 90,000 words, and most published novels fall between 70,000 and 100,000 words depending on the genre.
