How Long Is an Essay? Word Counts by Type, Level and Exam

Essay length depends on who set it: about 500 words for a five-paragraph essay, 1,500 to 5,000 at college, and far more for a dissertation.

How long is an essay? A typical essay is 500 to 5,000 words. A five-paragraph school essay runs about 500 words, while essays for college courses usually fall between 1,500 and 5,000 words, and graduate essays can reach 6,000.

The honest answer, though, is that an essay is as long as whoever set it says it is. The numbers below are the defaults you can plan around when the brief is vague, plus the exam limits, dissertation lengths and word-count rules that catch students out.

How long is an essay by level?

Essays grow as you move up through education because the questions get bigger. A high school essay might ask you to argue one point about one book. A graduate essay might ask you to weigh a whole body of research. The ranges below come from Scribbr's essay length guidelines, which match what most schools and universities set.

Application essays are a different animal: they have hard limits set by the application system, not a teacher. If that's what you're writing, our guide to how long a college essay should be covers the Common App, UC and supplemental limits in detail.

Horizontal bar chart of typical essay lengths in words: IELTS Writing Task 2 at least 250; five-paragraph essay about 500; high school essay up to 1,000 (range 300 to 1,000); undergraduate essay up to 5,000 (1,500 to 5,000); graduate essay up to 6,000 (2,500 to 6,000).
Typical upper lengths for common essay types. The five-paragraph essay is the one most students meet first.

How long is a five-paragraph essay?

A five-paragraph essay is usually about 500 words, give or take 100. The format is fixed: one introduction with a thesis, three body paragraphs that each make one point, and one conclusion. The UMGC Effective Writing Center calls this the 1-3-1 structure.

The format itself says nothing about word count, so the length comes from paragraph size. Short school paragraphs run 80 to 120 words, which puts the whole essay at 400 to 600 words. If a teacher asks for a five-paragraph essay of 1,000 words, each paragraph simply needs to be twice as developed: more evidence, more explanation, not more padding.

How many words should a paragraph be in an essay?

For university work, 200 to 300 words per body paragraph is a sensible target. The University of Hull's academic writing guide says academic paragraphs are usually in that range. School essays tend to use shorter paragraphs of around 100 words.

Treat that as a check, not a rule. The UNC Writing Center points out that length and appearance don't make something a paragraph; what matters is that every sentence supports one controlling idea. In practice, a 450-word paragraph usually hides two ideas, and a 60-word paragraph in a university essay usually states a point without proving it.

The paragraph count follows from the total. A 1,500-word essay with 250-word paragraphs has about six paragraphs: an introduction, four body paragraphs and a conclusion. A 3,000-word essay needs roughly 12.

How many paragraphs are in an essay?

A short school essay usually has five paragraphs: an introduction, three body paragraphs and a conclusion. Longer essays add body paragraphs rather than stretching each one, so the count depends on the total and on your paragraph length: about 100 words in school essays and 200 to 300 at university.

How long are exam essays?

Timed essays are limited by the clock, and sometimes by a minimum word count. Here's what the best-known exams ask for, as of September 2026.

IELTS is the one with a real minimum: Task 2 needs at least 250 words and counts twice as much as Task 1 toward your writing score. Aiming for 260 to 300 gives you a buffer, so a miscount under time pressure doesn't leave you short.

The AP English Language exam gives you 2 hours 15 minutes for three essays (synthesis, rhetorical analysis and argument), and that time includes a 15-minute reading period. The GRE now has a single 30-minute "Analyze an Issue" task. Neither sets a length, so write what you can develop well in the time.

If you're studying from an older prep book, note that the College Board discontinued the optional SAT Essay after June 2021. It survives only in some states' school-day testing.

How long is a dissertation or thesis?

Much longer, and the limits are set by each university and often each department. At Cambridge, for example, the PhD word limits differ by degree committee:

  • Biology: up to 60,000 words (80,000 by special permission), excluding tables, footnotes, bibliography and appendices.

  • Engineering: up to 65,000 words, including the summary, figure captions and footnotes.

  • History and Law: up to 80,000 words.

Research master's degrees are shorter. The University of Bristol caps MPhil and MScR dissertations at 25,000 or 30,000 words depending on the school. Taught master's and undergraduate dissertations are shorter again and vary by course, so check your handbook.

US dissertations are usually described in pages rather than words. Lincoln Mullen's analysis of ProQuest dissertation data found history and art history the longest, with a median history dissertation of 320 pages, and economics among the shortest.

How many pages is an essay?

Count on about 250 words per double-spaced page and 500 per single-spaced page in a 12-point font with one-inch margins. That makes a 500-word essay two double-spaced pages, a 1,500-word essay six, and a 3,000-word essay twelve.

Page counts shift a lot with font and spacing, which is why most instructors now set words instead. Our post on how many pages 1,000 words fills shows the differences between fonts, and the Words Per Page calculator will work out your exact setup.

Can you go over or under an essay word count?

Many students believe there's a universal "10% rule" that lets you go a little over. There isn't. Some universities allow a margin; others penalize the first extra word. Two London universities show the range:

  • SOAS allows work to be up to 10% over or under the stated word count, then deducts 10 percentage points for 10–20% over, 15 points for 20–30% over, and gives zero above that (SOAS policy).

  • UCL Arts and Sciences takes 10 percentage points off work that exceeds the maximum by any amount, though never below the pass mark (UCL guidance).

Going well under the count is a risk of a different kind. Nobody docks marks for concision, but a 1,500-word essay handed in at 1,100 words usually lacks the depth the marker expects. If you're more than about 10% short, the essay probably needs another point or more evidence, not longer sentences.

What counts toward an essay's word count?

This is where honest students accidentally go over. Rules differ by institution and even by department. UCL's guidance gives a common example: footnotes are included in the word count, but the bibliography is not. At Cambridge, Biology excludes footnotes from the PhD limit while Engineering includes them.

Three columns: usually counted (main body text; footnotes in UCL's example; summary and captions for Cambridge Engineering); usually excluded (bibliography, appendices, cover page); varies (footnotes, tables and captions, abstract), because departments set different rules.
What usually counts toward the limit. Footnotes, tables and abstracts vary, so check before you submit.

To get an accurate number, paste only the sections that count into a word counter, rather than trusting the total for the whole file. If you're working from a finished Word or PDF file, the Document Word Counter reads it directly.

How to plan an essay to a word count

Deciding the length of each section before you write saves hours of cutting later. A reliable split is roughly 10% for the introduction, 80% for the body and 10% for the conclusion. Scribbr's guidance agrees that the body should always take up the most space, and that essays under 3,000 words rarely need more than a one-paragraph introduction.

Stacked bar splitting a 2,000-word essay into an introduction of 200 words, three body sections of 550, 550 and 500 words, and a conclusion of 200 words, so the body takes about 80 percent of the total.
A 2,000-word essay planned before drafting: short introduction and conclusion, three well-developed body sections.

  1. Write the word budget for each section at the top of your outline.

  2. Give each body paragraph one point, one or two pieces of evidence, and your analysis of them.

  3. Draft without stopping to count, then check each section against its budget.

  4. Cut the section that is furthest over, not a little from everywhere. A whole weak paragraph is easier to lose than 40 scattered words.

Common essay length mistakes

  • Padding to reach the minimum. Markers can tell. "In today's society" openings and long quotations add words but no marks.

  • Overlong introductions. A 400-word introduction in a 1,500-word essay leaves too little room for the argument.

  • Summarizing instead of concluding. A conclusion that repeats each paragraph wastes the last 10% of your budget.

  • Counting the wrong text. Including the reference list, or leaving out footnotes that count, gives you a false total.

  • Trusting page counts. Two pages in one font can be 100 words longer than two pages in another. Use words whenever you can.

The quickest way to see where you stand is to paste your draft into the Word Counter. It shows words, sentences and paragraphs as you type, so you can check each section against its budget, and nothing you paste leaves your browser.
