How long is a college essay? It's usually 250 to 650 words. That's the range for the Common App personal essay in the 2026–27 application cycle (for students starting college in fall 2027), and it's the essay most colleges in the US ask for. Other essays are shorter: each University of California answer is capped at 350 words, and most supplemental essays run 50 to 250 words.
Because every application sets its own limit, the real answer depends on where you're applying. Below are the current word limits for the Common App, Coalition, UC and several well-known supplements, what happens if you go over, and how to cut a draft that runs long without losing what makes it yours.
How long is the Common App essay?
The Common App personal essay has a minimum of 250 words and a maximum of 650. The University of North Carolina, which uses the Common App, lists the essay as 250–650 words on its 2026–2027 application page and adds a useful reminder: 650 words is your limit, not your goal.
The prompts haven't changed. On February 27, 2026, Common App announced the 2026–2027 essay prompts would stay the same as the previous year, and the application opened on August 1. You choose one of seven prompts, including a "topic of your choice" option. In the 2025–26 cycle that open prompt was the most popular pick, used by 28% of students, followed by the prompt about facing adversity at 23%.
Not every Common App college requires the personal essay. Common App says each member college sets its own requirements, including whether the personal essay is needed, so check each school on your list.
How long is a college essay supposed to be?
Use most of the space you're given. For the Common App, a strong essay usually lands between 550 and 650 words. There's no rule that says a 400-word essay gets marked down, but a very short essay often means you've told the reader what happened without showing why it mattered.
The opposite mistake is common too. Students treat 650 as the target and add sentences until they reach it. Readers can tell when a paragraph exists only to fill space. A better rule: write a full draft without watching the count, then cut or expand toward 90 to 100 percent of the limit.
College essay word limits by application
Here's how the most common essays compare for the 2026–27 cycle. Supplemental limits change from year to year, so confirm them in each college's section of your application.
Essay | Word limit | How many |
|---|---|---|
Common App personal essay | 250–650 | 1 |
Coalition with Scoir essay | About 500–650 (suggested) | 1, if required |
UC personal insight questions | Up to 350 each | 4 of 8 |
Stanford short essays | 100–250 each | 3 |
Stanford short questions | 3–50 each | 5 |
MIT essays | About 100–200 each | 4 |
MIT short responses | 40–50 each | 4 |
UChicago extended essay | No strict limit (aim ~650) | 1 |

How long are the UC personal insight questions?
The University of California doesn't use the Common App or a single long essay. Instead, you answer 4 of 8 personal insight questions, and each response is limited to a maximum of 350 words. That's up to 1,400 words in total, more than twice the Common App essay.
UC says all eight questions are given equal consideration, so there's no advantage in choosing one over another. The application for fall 2027 applicants opened on August 1, 2026.
One practical difference: UC answers are meant to be direct. The questions ask for specific things (leadership, creativity, a challenge, community), and readers want concrete examples. A 350-word answer has room for one example told well, not a list of achievements.
How long are supplemental essays?
Supplements are the college-specific questions you answer on top of the main essay. Their length is set by each college, and it varies a lot:
Stanford asks five short questions with a 3-word minimum and a 50-word maximum, plus three short essays of 100 to 250 words each.
MIT skips the long essay entirely. For 2026–2027 it asks four essay questions of about 100 to 200 words each and four short responses with space for 40 to 50 words.
UChicago sets no strict word limits on its supplement. It suggests about 650 words for the extended essay and 250 to 500 for "Why UChicago?".
Short answers are harder than they look. A 50-word response is about three sentences, which means every word has to carry weight. Draft these in a separate document, count them, and trim before you paste.
How long is the Coalition essay?
The Coalition for College, whose application now runs on Scoir, recommends essays of about 500 to 650 words, the same ballpark as the Common App. Only some member colleges require an essay, so check your list. Many students reuse a Common App essay here with light edits, which works fine as long as it answers the Coalition prompt you pick.
What happens if your college essay is over the word limit?
In most application systems you simply can't submit it. Common App says its system will prompt you if you exceed or don't meet the word limit for an essay question, and the section won't show as complete until you fix it.
The bigger risk is when there's no hard stop. UChicago, for example, says it won't stop reading after 650 words, but warns it can't promise an overly wordy essay will hold its attention. If a college only suggests a length, stay close to the suggestion.
How many pages or paragraphs is a college essay?
A 650-word essay is about 1.3 single-spaced pages or 2.6 double-spaced pages in 12-point font. You won't submit it as pages, though: you paste it into a text box, so page length only matters while you're drafting. The Words Per Page calculator will show the page count for any font and spacing, and our guide on how many pages 1,000 words fills explains the math.
Most 650-word essays have five to seven paragraphs. That's not a rule, but it's a good check. If you have three huge paragraphs, you probably need more breaks for the reader. If you have twelve, some ideas may be too thin.
Essay length | Single-spaced pages | Double-spaced pages | Typical paragraphs |
|---|---|---|---|
50 words | 0.1 | 0.2 | 1 |
250 words | 0.5 | 1 | 2–3 |
350 words | 0.7 | 1.4 | 3–4 |
500 words | 1 | 2 | 4–5 |
650 words | 1.3 | 2.6 | 5–7 |
How to cut a college essay that's too long
It's common for a first draft to run well past the limit. Cut in this order, from big to small, and recount after each pass:

Cut a whole scene. If you tell two stories that make the same point, keep the stronger one. This one step can free up a whole paragraph.
Trim the opening. Many drafts spend a paragraph setting up. Start closer to the moment that matters.
Shorten the ending. Don't summarize what the reader just read. End on what you learned or what you'll do next.
Tighten sentences. Delete filler words and phrases like "really", "very", "I think that" and "in order to". Turn passive sentences active.
Recount in the portal. Paste into the application and check the number there.

Common college essay length mistakes
Writing to the minimum. 250 words meets the Common App rule but rarely gives enough room to reflect.
Padding to reach 650. Extra adjectives and a recap ending make an essay weaker, not longer in a useful way.
Reusing one essay everywhere without adjusting the length. A 650-word Common App essay won't fit a 350-word UC box. Rewrite, don't just chop the ending.
Trusting one word counter. Your word processor and the application box can disagree by a few words. The application's count is the one that matters.
Leaving it to the last day. Cutting well takes a day or two away from the draft. Plan for it.
Paste your draft into the Word Counter to track words, characters and paragraphs as you edit. Nothing is uploaded, so your essay stays private. For more ways to check counts in Google Docs or Word, see how to check word count.
Frequently asked questions
What is the word limit for the Common App essay?
The Common App personal essay must be between 250 and 650 words for the 2026–27 application cycle. The system won't let you complete the section if you're outside that range.
Can a college essay be 700 words?
Not on the Common App, which stops at 650 words. A few colleges, such as UChicago, suggest a length but don't enforce a hard limit, and you should still stay close to their suggestion.
Is 500 words enough for a college essay?
Yes, 500 words can be enough if the essay tells one clear story and reflects on it. Most strong Common App essays use 550 to 650 words, so a 500-word draft may have room to go deeper.

Did the Common App essay prompts change for 2026–27?
No. Common App announced in February 2026 that all seven prompts would stay the same for the 2026–2027 application year.
How many paragraphs should a college essay have?
Most 650-word college essays have five to seven paragraphs. Use a new paragraph for each shift in time, place or idea rather than aiming for a fixed number.
How many pages is a 650-word essay?
About 1.3 single-spaced pages or 2.6 double-spaced pages in a 12-point font. College essays are pasted into a text box, so the word count is what's checked, not pages.
What is the Common App essay word limit?
The Common App personal essay has a limit of 650 words for 2026–27, and the application asks for at least 250 words. The box won't accept more than 650.
